Extending for more than 150 kilometres between the two seas which have modelled its morphology and history, the Salento has an enchanting and evocative coastline, which alternates between the wild precipices which for100 km plunge into the sea, from San Cataldo to Santa Maria di Leuca, on the Adriatic side, to the golden sandy beaches of the Adriatic side, to the golden sandy beaches of the lonian coast, from Leuca up to Porto Cesareo, in a progressive and inebriating succession of Saracen towers marine caves, caverns, bays, cliffs, islands, rocks, beaches, natural coves and damp areas which have no paragons in the Mediterranean.
The territory of “Alto Salento”
The territory of “Alto Salento” is rich in charming kinds of accomodations like farms, “lamie”, trulli, “casedde”, situated on many-coloured inner hills with little vineyard, almond and olive trees farms. Survived the human carelessness and time, nowadays farms and trulli were moved to their original splendour and they werw assigned to rural hospitality in touch with rhythms and landscapes of this land. Immersed in the country, a few kilometres from the sea, this accomodations let guestes knowing the real and autentic spirit of this synthesis of story, culture, tradition, art and gastronomy, that is this part of Apulia. The typical farm of Alto Salento is the extraordinary and singular result of a system of agricultural economy relationships, that takes his roots in Middle Ages till the end of nineteenth-century. In the farms develops an agricultural economy where to many fields under cultivations (olive oil, vine, cereals, legume) and to breeding, it's added the activity of transformation (olive oil, wine, cheese). In the course of ages a lot of farms have added to the productive function the summer accomodations of the owners. From now authentic masterpieces of noble residences are originated, where baroque finds the more singular form of expression. The hospitality of Apulia explodes also in structures of ancient and marvellous farms, that nowadays receive refined tourist lodgins. An unique experience is living inside trullo: little rooms with ceiling dome- shaped, cone roof of white calcareous stone block closed by pinnacles; the large walls, white or of warm colours, are about one metre thick, and for this reason the interiors are cool in the summer and warm in the winter; there are niches in the wall like shelves and around there is an ancient nature, gentle and full of perfumes that are used to change with the seasons.
